Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA) Demands Justice for Victims of Recent Violence
The Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA) is calling for justice for Mr. Saipoln Godfred Bemaa (deceased), Mr. Ujakpa Nakoja, and Mr. Niyasangma Joseph.
In a press release dated June 29, 2025, KOYA condemned the senseless killings of two individuals during the recent conflict in Nkwanta South, Oti Region.
The association expressed outrage over the brutal murder of Mr. Saipoln Godfred Bemaa, a final-year student at Nkwanta Senior High School, who was shot on June 27, 2025.
A native of Taguldo in the Tatale Sangul District of the Northern Region, Mr. Bemaa had enrolled at Nkwanta Senior High School in the 2023 academic year. At the time of his tragic death, he was taking his mock examinations when unknown gunmen targeted the student population, resulting in his fatal injury. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he could not survive.
On June 28, 2025, while KOYA leaders, including the Konkomba Chief of Nkwanta, Ubor Talor, and representatives from the Konkomba Workers Welfare Association led by Mr. Godwin Yaw Nsumbe, were organizing a peaceful dialogue within the community, another attack occurred. Two Konkomba brothers, Mr. Ujakpa Nakoja and Master Niyasangma Joseph, were ambushed by gunmen while traveling from Pawa to collect their belongings from Nkwanta Senior High School. They were shot at near the Abrewankor junction but were subsequently taken to the hospital and are currently recovering.
In their letter to authorities, KOYA highlighted several key points:
1. The Konkomba people (BIKPAKPAAM) have coexisted peacefully with other ethnic groups, including the Adele, Challa, and Akyode, in Nkwanta South Municipality and the broader Oti Region.
2. They have no vested interest in the ongoing conflict in Nkwanta South and will maintain a neutral stance.
3. They are committed to choosing peace over violence unless provoked beyond their limits.
4. While they will continue to pursue peace, any future attacks on Konkomba individuals will be met with proportional response.
5. Observations indicate that certain individuals associated with national security are exacerbating tensions in Nkwanta; KOYA appeals for an investigation into this matter to help alleviate the situation.
KOYA demands:
1. The immediate identification and prosecution of those responsible for the attacks.
2. The arrest of individuals linked to national security who may be complicating the conflict.
3. Urgent security enhancements from the government, interior ministry, and national security agencies within the municipality.
They urge all stakeholders to:
1. Advocate for justice for the victims.
2. Promptly involve the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service to seek justice for those affected.
3. Promote peace over violence among authorities, stakeholders, and residents of Nkwanta South Municipality.
4. Encourage collaboration among the Adele, Akyode, and Challa communities to foster peace.
5. Remain calm as they collectively seek justice and lasting peace.
May the soul of Master Saipoln Godfred Bemaa rest in peace, and may Mr. Ujakpa Nakoja and Master Niyasangma Joseph have a swift recovery.
