CONCERN REGARDING INNOCENT KONKOMBA PEOPLE CAUGHT IN THE ONGOING CONFLICT IN NKWANTA SOUTH, OTI REGION

On June 28, 2025 representatives of the Konkomba community expressed their deep concern over the recent violence that has resulted in the deaths of innocent Konkomba individuals amidst the conflict involving the Akyode, Challa, and Adele groups in Nkwanta.

The community leaders highlighted their alarm regarding the ongoing tensions in the OTI Region, emphasizing that while the Konkomba people are being drawn into this conflict, the underlying causes and circumstances are often overlooked.

Historically, the OTI Region has been characterized by peaceful coexistence among various tribes, including the Konkomba, Akyode, Challa, and Adele. Unfortunately, the current situation has unjustly implicated innocent Konkomba individuals. The representatives voiced their concern that no authorities have intervened to caution the parties involved. They fear that if the Konkomba people are compelled to defend themselves, they will be misrepresented by the media as aggressors.
The Konkomba representatives issued a stern warning to the appropriate authorities, stating that if immediate action is not taken to address the situation and protect innocent Konkomba citizens from harm, they will have no choice but to defend themselves.

Recent incidents have heightened their fears: on June 27, 2025, a student from Nkwanta Senior High School was shot while taking a mock examination in class. Additionally, on June 28, two individuals traveling from Nkwanta Pawa were also shot and required urgent medical attention.

The community demands that authorities take proactive measures to:

1. Address the root causes of the conflict between the Akyodes, Challas, and Adeles.

2. Ensure the safety of innocent Konkomba civilians caught in the crossfire.

3. Promote fair and accurate media reporting to prevent the unjust stigmatization of the Konkomba people.

The representatives expect prompt action from authorities to prevent further escalation and to foster peaceful coexistence among all tribes in the OTI Region.
